Tough Mudder

Posted on

What is the definition of crazy?

Webster defines it as:

a : mad, insane <yelling like a crazy man>

b (1) : impractical <a crazy plan> (2) : erratic <crazy drivers>

c : being out of the ordinary : unusual <a taste for crazy hats>

OR, is crazy running over 11 miles while you traverse over, through or under 25 plus obstacles (such as giant ice water pits, mud pits, climbing over 12 foot high walls, crawling through pipes with muddy ice water in them, climbing over an enormous pile of hay bales, cargo net bridges, monkey bars that may be greased, jump off a 15 ft high platform into water then swim 50 feet to get out…..just a few examples).

This is the TOUGH MUDDER!!

Tough Mudder events are hardcore 10-12 mile obstacle courses designed by British Special Forces to test your all around strength, stamina, mental grit, and camaraderie. With the most innovative courses, half a million inspiring participants, and more than $3 million raised for the Wounded Warrior Project, Tough Mudder is the premier adventure challenge series in the world.”

Maybe THAT is what crazy is.

Whatever the definition is, I am going to run this race three days after my 40th birthday this year.

To train for an event like this takes a serious plan, determination, commitment, guts, heart and maybe to be a little crazy too. The workout suggestions on their website are difficult, but I am no stranger to exercise or hard work and have plenty of stubbornness in me to never give up. Not only do you need to be in great shape physically/mentally to conquer the obstacles, but the ability to run over 11 miles while you conquer them is a must. Regardless of the difficulty of the race or the countless hours of training this stacks up to be a really good time.

The Tough Mudder event is also a proud sponsor of the Wounded Warrior Project. As stated earlier participants have raised over $3 million dollars for this organization. I do not usually ask people to buy or pledge or donate to things I am involved with because we are all asked to give to different charities often, but I am asking this time. The WWP provides wonderful services to the wounded men and women in uniform and assists them in getting their life back in order. If I raise more than $150 I get a $25 refund from my entry fee….which I will donate to the WWP as well. There is no reason for me to benefit from the generosity of others, instead I will stand along side those that help. Please check out their web site and if you want to donate click the link below(it is linked to my registration in order to track how much I have a raised). I thank you for your generosity.

Along my training journey I will post updates of how I am doing or what I have been up to. The one thing that I will not stop doing while I train is biking to work each day ( I love it too much). Well I guess that is not true I will be running the nine miles to work on Fridays to keep up with the running aspect.

Always Plenty Of Room For More

T-shirt, Polo shirt, shorts, socks, breakfast & lunch containers, orange, two bananas,
tool bag, sun glasses case, bike pump and a flat rate box filled with stuff.
All this fit in my two panniers with a total weight of 23.5 pounds.   The large increase in weight did not affect
the ride at all.  I am always amazed in how much stuff I can cram in these and still fly to work easily.

Bicycle Commuter Contest 2012

Posted on

It has been too long since my last post and I am sure you you are all waiting on baited breath to hear from me……

May is slowly approaching and cannot get here soon enough.  The thought of flowers blooming, warmer temperatures and maybe blue, cloud free skies brings a smile to my face.  It also means that the annual Bicycle Commuter Contest(BCC) is almost here!!  Intercity Transit is the main organizer of the event and countless local organizations and businesses(including Velo Totes) support through many channels.  You can either register as an individual or start a team to compete.  Basically you track the miles you ride on your bike for the month of May.  Any trip you take where you would have normally driven counts towards your total(riding for pleasure does not count).  There are numerous categories for participants to enter and all have prizes for winners.  For incentives sponsors donate all kinds of items for prizes, coupons, giveaways and such.  The aim of the event is to encourage and promote bicycling as an alternative to driving to work.  I am a convert.  An employee of mine started a team many years ago and asked me if I would join, so I did.  Before the month long contest was over I was hooked and have not looked back since.  Through the same technique I was able to get a friend of mine hooked on biking as well and we now ride together every day!

At Velo Totes we are participating as a sponsor this year.  We will be donating a set of our Panniers as a raffle prize.  The winner will get to create a set of Panniers in any combination of colors they choose.  Go to our website for photos and product information.

New Product Review……My Patience

Posted on

Some say patience is a virtue.  Indeed it is, with true patience one can accomplish volumes in their life.  I also believe that life likes to call us out on the things we promise to ourselves.  “If you really mean what you say then show me now” life says, as it throws a curve ball to you or a really good changeup.  How will you react?  Will it be the same way you usually do or will you exhibit that new behavior life is calling you out on?  Well I think life is testing me this week.  Within the last two miles of my commute home( on a gorgeous sunny day) I get another total blow-out flat and have to walk home, then I find out that the crazy idiot living on the corner is probably making Meth and today the battery in my car dies while I am picking my daughter up at Jazz Band.  Anger would have been flowing through my arteries and veins.  With a calmer cooler head realizing that it is not the end of the world I just took what life dealt in stride.  Walking home allowed me to enjoy the afternoon more.  The car battery can be replaced with a new one.  Crazy insane drug addicted dirtbags will do themselves in.  So, the end of the world did not come and with a little patience I could show life I do mean what I say……..bring on the next pitch please.

Back In The Saddle

My wife said to lay off biking for two weeks to allow my knee to fully heal.  Today was the two week point and I do not think she could have picked a more beautiful winter day to be right on.  The ride this morning was a brisk 27 degrees with crystal clear skies.  The stars were shining bright past a waning moon and I believe Mars was beginning to set as well.  With new limbs and trees down the forest had fresh evidence of the toll winter was taking upon it.  Morning turned into a wonderful sunny day that would make the ride home a joy.  The best part of all was when my phone rang…….a long awaited call from my wife.  Words cannot express how elated I was to hear her voice and talk to her for a few precious minutes.  That call combined with the beautiful day made for an effortless ride home and I was on cloud 9…….what about my knee???…..doesn’t matter

Another Biking Hiatus Update

Another Biking Hiatus Update

If you know me at all…..I love food!  Cooking new dishes and expanding my palette gets me excited and makes me happy.  Eating Crow on the other hand is a dish that I am realizing I need to have more often.   Read the rest of this entry

Biking Hiatus Update

Knee surgery went very well, relatively quick and painless…..at least that is what my brain can recall through the haze created by the cocktail of pain meds and other doping agents I was given.  Three days post surgery and recovery is progressing ahead of schedule.   Today was my first day back to work and I had some minor swelling due to being on my feet all day.  Fortunately, the only discomfort I have is at the incision sites which should dissipate in a few more days.  I really want this to heal properly so I do not think I will attempt a full commute to work until next Wednesday, but going for a small ride this weekend might be good exercise(just don’t tell my wife or she will kick my a** or my knee, when she gets home).

Enjoying The Day Off My Bike

It is true that there is never a bad day to ride, but yesterday seemed like a great day for a walk around Capitol Lake.  At 50 plus degrees and completely sunny, the park was full of life.  Kids playing, dogs running, friends conversing, people exercising and lovers walking hand-in-hand(even some newly weds having photos taken) all the while sharing an absolutely stunning midwinter day.  Sometimes we need to slow down from our hectic life, put the electronics away and relish in the fact we live in such a beautiful area of the country.
